This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, a landmark event that produced the most progressive and comprehensive policy statement to date on gender equality. Beijing energized women from all walks of life and placed their empowerment at the core of the global development agenda.

UNESCO�s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) allocates more than US$2.1 million for 84 media development projects

At its 54th annual meeting at UNESCO headquarters on 24 � 26 February, the Bureau of the Organization�s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) selected 84 development projects put forward by local media in 61 developing and emerging countries. The grants awarded by the eight members of the Committee totalled more than US$2.1 million.

The Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova launched the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures with the establishment of the High Panel on Peace and Dialogue among Cultures. �This day marks the beginning of an intellectual journey throughout which we will reflect on ways to trace new perspectives for peace in the 21st Century,� declared the Director-General.

The UNESCO Almaty cluster office has produced the Russian translation of the publication �Non renewable groundwater resources. A guidebook on socially-sustainable management for water policy makers�. The original publication was issued in 2006 within the frame of the transboundary groundwater assessment project implemented by the International Hydrological Programme (IHP).

Almaty city authorities gathered with researchers, NGOs and international organizations 29 January to discuss safety issues in Almaty�s neighborhood public markets. The roundtable was held as part of the �Safe City� project launched in 2009 under the direction of the Public Foundation �Crisis Center "Girlfriends (Podrugi)" in partnership with UNESCO Almaty and the UNIFEM Regional Office for the CIS.
