General Guidelines to Safeguard Documentary Heritage

Documentary heritage reflects the diversity of languages, peoples and cultures. It is the mirror of the world and its memory. But this memory is fragile. Every day, irreplaceable parts of this memory disappear for ever.

  • Register - The Memory of the World Register lists documentary heritage which has been identified by the International Advisory Committee in its meetings in Tashkent (September 1997), in Vienna (June 1999) and in Cheongju City (June 2001) and endorsed by the Director-General of UNESCO as corresponding the selection criteria for world significance.

    Audio Visual Archive RK: Support for digital migration of content in audiovisual libraries including PSB libraries

    On 29-30 November 2004 twenty two representatives of national audiovisual archives, main broadcasting organizations and National MOW Committees of Central Asia participate in the a two-day training workshop.
    Organized by UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office in collaboration with the Central State Archive of Audiovisual and Photo Documents of the Republic of Kazakhstan within the framework of the UNESCO activity ‘Support for digital migration of content in audiovisual libraries including PSB libraries’.



    Memory of the World Programme and Digital Heritage Subregional Training course in Bishkek

    12-13 August, 2004: Sub-regional workshop training in using the UNESCO software 'Sub-Regional MOW Register' (Memory of Central Asia) for the National Committees of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan for the Memory of the World Programme.



    Kazkommertzbank and IBM sponsored Kazak Rare Books Digitalisation

    Kazkommertzbank and IBM support best traditions of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme and the project of the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NLRK) Written Heritage -Digital Archive by funding equiment and software. Earlier IBM participated in similar activities in Vatican, Cairo, and the Sant-Petersburg Hermitage.
    Digital Archive - is a project on creation of electronic digital archive in the National Library of Kazakhstan proposed to KKB in 2003.
    After that Kazkommertz bank created its own Charitable Foundation called "Kus Zholy" to manage this project and negotiated collaboration with IBM.
